  4.                      How does FLOPYCAT work ?
  5.    
  6.  1. MENUS  
  7.   All FLOPYCAT functions are invoked by Menus or Hot Keys.
  8.   The current menu commands and corresponding Hot Keys are:  
  9.  
  10.    A) CATALOG (Alt-C):  
  11.       - Catdisk (Ctrl-C):  
  12.             Causes the program to read a floppy disk in a  
  13.             designated disk drive, and to make entries in  
  14.             the FLOPYCAT catalog for files located in all  
  15.             directories displayed.  (If any directory on  
  16.             the floppy disk is not displayed at some point,  
  17.             no entries for files in that directory will be  
  18.             made to the catalog.)  
  19.  
  20.       - FindEntry (Ctrl-F):  
  21.             Locates an entry in the catalog, based on full or  
  22.             partial filename, directory, disk volume label, or  
  23.             any combination of these  
  24.  
  25.       - DeleteEntry (Ctrl-D):  
  26.             Locates an entry in the catalog, based on full or  
  27.             partial filename, directory, disk volume label, or  
  28.             any combination of these, to prepare for deletion  
  29.  
  30.       - Exit (Ctrl-X):  
  31.             Terminates the program  
  32.    
  33.    B) DIRECTORIES (Alt-D):  
  34.       - ShowDirs (Ctrl-S):  
  35.             Shows all the directories found on the floppy disk  
  36.             in a pop-up window  
  37.  
  38.       - NextDir (Ctrl-N)  
  39.             Displays the files found in the 'next' directory on  
  40.             the current floppy disk. It also writes any changes  
  41.             to the currently displayed information back to the  
  42.             catalog  
  43.  
  44.       - PrevDir (Ctrl-P)  
  45.             Displays the files found in the 'previous' directory 
  46.  
  47.             on the current floppy disk. It also writes any   
  48.             changes to the currently displayed information  
  49.             back to the catalog.

  51.    C) PRINT (Alt-R):
  52.       - PrintOne (Ctrl-O)
  53.             Prints all catalogue entries for files on a SINGLE
  54.             floppy disk.  Use repetitively to print catalogue
  55.             entries for several (but not all) cataogued disks.
  56.             Output goes to the current Windows default printer.
  57.  
  58.       - PrintAll (Ctrl-A)
  59.             Prints all entries in the FLOPYCAT catalogue to
  60.             the current Windows default printer.

  63.       - General Info (Ctrl-G)  
  64.             Displays this Help File

  67.  2. METHOD OF OPERATION  
  68.  
  69.   A) Start a 'Catalog' Operation:  
  70.   Insert a floppy disk in any drive then select the Menu Item
  71.   'CATALOG' and then the Menu Entry 'Catdisk'. In the pop-up
  72.   window which appears, use the pull-down list to indicate the
  73.   drive you want read, or click on the 'OKAY' button if the
  74.   correct drive is already displayed.  
  75.  
  76.   B) Files are loaded:  
  77.   The program reads the specified floppy disk and finds all the
  78.   files in all the directories on the disk.  It then displays
  79.   the information about each file (excluding directries) found
  80.   in the top-level directory of the disk.  
  81.  
  82.   C) Existing Descriptions Extracted from Catalog:  
  83.   For each file found in each directory, the program checks the
  84.   FLOPYCAT catalog to see if an entry already exists for the
  85.   file.  If no catalog entry is found, the phrase 'No Entry
  86.   Found in Catalog' is displayed in place of the description.
  87.   If a catalog entry is found but it does not have a file
  88.   description, the phrase 'No Description Found in Catalog'
  89.   is printed in place of the description.  Otherwise the file
  90.   description from the catalog is displayed for that entry
  91.   along with the other information about the file.  
  92.  
  93.   D) Other Information About the Files:  
  94.   In all cases, the file size and creation date/time shown on
  95.   the display are those taken from the Floppy disk and not from
  96.   the catalog.  This is done since the information from the
  97.   floppy disk will be either the same as or newer (more recent)
  98.   than the information in the catalog.  (See 'Saving
  99.   Information to the Catalog' below.)  
  100.  
  101.   E) Updating the Description in the catalog:  
  102.   For any displayed file entry, you can type in a new (or
  103.   modified) file description. Just click on the entry to be
  104.   changed, and then enter the description in the high-
  105.   lighted box at the bottom of the screen.  Press the <ENTER> key
  106.   to move the new description up into the display area.  
  107.     NOTE: You cannot change any of the other displayed  
  108.               information, since it all comes from the floppy  
  109.               disk which is current and considered correct.   
  110.  
  111.   F) Saving Information to the Catalog:  
  112.   Once the contents of a directory have been displayed, (and
  113.   perhaps descriptions modified), you will want to save that
  114.   information permanently in the FLOPYCAT catalog.  There are
  115.   several ways to do this:  
  116.       1)  Move to another directory:  
  117.           When you change directories, either with the  
  118.           NEXTDIR or PREVDIR commands, or directly by  
  119.           selecting a directory from the SHOWDIRS window,  
  120.           the current contents of the display screen are  
  121.           saved in the FLOPYCAT catalog.  
  122.       2)  Click the 'Save to Catalog' button:  
  123.           This will write the currently displayed information to 
  124.           the catalog and clear the screen. The program  
  125.           will still be pointing at the same floppy disk  
  126.           directory.  
  127.       3)  Terminate the program:  
  128.           When you select EXIT to terminate the program,  
  129.           the contents of the displayed screen are first  
  130.           written to the catalog.  
  131.  
  132.   G) More about the SHOWDIRS Menu Item:  
  133.   If a floppy disk has many sub-directories, you may find it
  134.   awkward to navigate around using the NEXTDIR and PREVDIR
  135.   commands. An alternative is the SHOWDIRS command, which
  136.   provides a scrollable pop-up window which displays ALL
  137.   the sub-directories on the floppy disk. Simply double-
  138.   click on any directory in the pop-up window, and the
  139.   contents of that directory will be displayed. (All
  140.   information displayed on the screen at that time will
  141.   automatically be saved to the Flopycat catalog.  
  142.  
  143.   H) Deleting old Catalog Entries:  
  144.   At some point it is likely that you will delete old
  145.   files from your floppy disks.  The entries for those
  146.   files can be deleted from the FLOPYCAT catalog by use
  147.   of the DeleteEntry menu item in the CATALOG menu.
  148.   No floppy disk needs to be accessed in order to use
  149.   this command.  
  150.  
  151.   I) Finding Files on Floppy Disks:  
  152.   One of the major benefits of cataloging your floppy disks
  153.   using Flopycat is the ability to quickly find out which
  154.   floppy disk contains the file you are looking for. To do
  155.   this, select the FindEntry menu item in the CATALOG menu.
  156.   A pop-up window will appear, in which you can enter any
  157.   of the following:   
  158.       1) Full or partial disk volume label, or leave blank  
  159.       2) Full or partial directory name, or leave blank  
  160.       3) Full or partial file name, or leave blank   
  161.   In all cases, 'full or partial' means you can enter the
  162.   search criteria in one of several ways, for example:  
  163.       1) file01.txt - will find only files with that name  
  164.                          and extension.  
  165.       2) file01.*   - will find all files with the name  
  166.                          'file01' with any extension  
  167.       3) *.bak      - will find files with any filename  
  168.                          and with an extension of '.bak'  
  169.       4) *ile*.txt  - will find files with the characters   
  170.                          'ile' somewhere in the filename and  
  171.                          with an extension of '.txt'  
  172.   These examples also apply to the specification of the
  173.   disk volume and/or the disk directory, or any combination
  174.   you want to search on. Note also that you do NOT need any
  175.   floppy disks installed to use this feature.

  177.   J) Requirement for disks to be LABELLED:  
  178.   FLOPYCAT uses three pieces of information to find a specific
  179.   file entry in the catalog: Disk Volume Label; Directory Name;
  180.   and Filename.  Therefore, FLOPYCAT will not process any
  181.   disk that does not have a Volume Label. You can use the
  182.   Windows File Manager to put a label on any floppy disk, even
  183.   if it has files on it (this is NOT the FORMAT DISK function).
